Vital Art and Science LLC has launched an app that will allow eye care providers to monitor progressive diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration, according to a company press release.

As detailed in the release, mVT has been cleared by the FDA and is available only by prescription. It can be used with any Apple tablet or smartphone.

Patients download the app and can test their vision at home with a 4- to 6-minute exam in the app, according to the release. Results are delivered to the physician's portal, where eye care providers can review them and determine if the patient needs an intervention.

"Our clinical trials have confirmed that the results from this convenient home test correlate well with in-office physician assessment and can potentially improve clinical outcomes by bringing in patients for earlier-than-planned examination and possibly treatment," Mike Bartlett, president of the company, said in the release. "Studies have shown that catching and treating vision degradation early may prevent some vision loss. Compliance with the prescribed mVT use is very high, and patients feel more engaged in the management of their disease. Both patients and doctors appreciate the convenience. Patients like to test at home, and doctors like having the results automatically collected and available any time for analysis."
