Visioneering Technologies Inc. introduced NaturalVue 1Day Multifocal daily disposable contact lens for presbyopia.

Using Neurofocus Optics technology, “The lens works with the brain to give the patient spectacle-level stereoacuity and vision at near, intermediate and distance,” Sally Dillehay, OD, Vision Technologies’ chief medical officer and vice president of clinical regulatory affairs, said in a company press release.

The company reported that patients in clinical trials with the lens “were able to complete more than 93% of normal visual tasks without using supplemental reading glasses or magnifiers.”

“We found that the lens rivaled spectacle vision at intermediate, which is unheard of in a multifocal contact lens,” clinical investigator Jeffrey Sonsino, OD, said in the release.  “I had subjects whose range of intermediate vision went from 40 cm all the way out to 115 cm.”

The lens is available in one base curve, one diameter and one universal add that accommodates up to 3 D of equivalent near power, according to the release. Company data indicates the NaturalVue multifocal lenses have an 89% fitting success rate, reduced office visits and less fitting time.

“Of the almost 30 subjects I ran, I had zero dropouts because of fit,” Sonsino said. “When you use optics or technology that is completely new — that nobody has tried before — there are incremental steps and then there are big leaps. I think the NaturalVue Multifocal 1 Day daily disposable lens is a big leap. This lens is a different animal altogether. It’s not like a center distance lens. It’s not like a center near lens. It’s a whole new technology on the market.”

NaturalVue Multifocal 1 Day daily disposable contact lenses have been launched in a select group of practices and will expand nationwide later in 2015, according to the release.
