Optometry Giving Sight launches crowdfunding campaign

Optometry Giving Sight is calling for donations to raise money for vision care for children in El Salvador.

According to a press release, the global fundraising initiative has launched a crowdfunding campaign in hopes of raising $27,000 to provide eye health care to more than 30,000 children living in extreme poverty.

The fundraiser, hosted on Indiegogo, is part of the Windows of Light program executed by FUDEM, a nonprofit organization in El Salvador, Optometry Giving Sight said.

“Meeting the visual health needs of El Salvador’s children with early detection and timely treatment of eye problems will give hope to many where there was none before,” Clive Miller, global CEO for Optometry Giving Sight, said in the release. “It will transform the lives of thousands of children in need.”

Optometry Giving Sight noted that 85% of the rural population in El Salvador is not able to access vision care. Most children are in need of an eye exam and a pair of glasses due to uncorrected refractive error, according to the release.

The fundraiser began on Nov. 19 and will close on Dec. 31, according to the fundraising page. As of Dec. 8, 2014, $6,606 in donations had been raised.
