‘Flat pack’ daily disposable lens now available from Menicon

DENVER – Menicon introduced its new Miru 1day Flat Pack daily disposable contact lens at an American Academy of Optometry-sponsored press conference here Wednesday.

Scott Orphanos, vice president of marketing and sales for the company, compared the profile of the daily disposable flat pack to a Band-Aid and said, at 1 mm, it is one-eighth the thickness of a traditional blister pack.

“It comes without the saline bowl,” he said. “When opened, it reveals the lens convex side up, so patients never have to touch the inside of the lens. The supporting disc is designed so you could open the pack, turn it upside down and shake it, and you won’t lose the lens.”

Orphanos said the company conducted research with contact lens wearers and attempted to address their complaints and frustrations with this new flat pack design.

The foil adhesive is easy to open even with wet hands, he said, due to the use of cosmetic industry-grade foil.

The 63-year-old contact lens manufacturer distributes soft contact lenses worldwide, but this is the first soft lens the company has released in the U.S., according to a company press release.
