The Ophthalmic Devices Panel of the Medical Devices Advisory Committee to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration met last week to discuss guidance documents for contact lenses and care products.

According to a summary from the FDA's website, "The discussions included topics such as a grouping system for silicone hydrogel contact lenses, microbiological and chemical preclinical testing, revision of preclinical test requirements to address patient noncompliance, potential modification of gas-permeable lens care regimens to remove use of water and labeling for these devices," according to the summary.

Additionally, representatives for the FDA presented on several of the discussion topics and Jennifer Cope, MD, MPH, of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control presented on Acanthamoeba keratitis investigations and a contact lens safety program, as detailed in the summary.
