Patients in Alberta will soon be able to see optometrists for primary eye care, according to a press release issued by the Alberta Minister of Health.
Optometrists who have been certified by the Alberta College of Optometrists will be able to treat minor eye conditions as well as "prescribe certain oral and topical drugs, order lab tests, order and apply ultrasound tests and treat certain types of glaucoma," as specified in the release.
“A key strategy in improving the health and well-being of Albertans is providing increased access to primary health care services in communities – which is where and when Albertans need it," Fred Horne, Minister of Health, said in the release. "By increasing the scope of practice of Alberta optometrists, the need for referrals to specialists for basic eye care services can be reduced, and Albertans will have immediate access to the eye care they need closer to home.”
The release noted that Alberta has more than 645 optometrists in more than 80 communities.
“We look forward to collaborating with government, the college and stakeholders in the months ahead to prepare for these new services," Aaron Patel, OD, president of the Alberta Association of Optometrists, said in the release. "Doctors of optometry welcome this opportunity to enhance the care that we provide to Albertans closer to their homes, thus better serving them.”
Sallie Barclay, OD, president of the Alberta College of Optometrists, said in the release that optometrists will need to "complete a certification program before providing these new services, meet rigorous standards of practice and undergo regular on-site practice reviews."
As detailed in the release, the changes will be implemented this fiscal year.
