BrightFocus Foundation announced Wednesday that it is awarding $8.7 million in research grants for diseases involving the mind and sight.

According to the organization, the funding will aid in the support of 59 projects in six nations.

Of the funding, $3.5 million will go toward projects on age-related macular degeneration or glaucoma. In a press release, BrightFocus noted that the research projects involve genetic research, cellular therapies and testing of new treatments.

“BrightFocus strives to identify and support the most promising, early-stage research,” Stacy Pagos Haller, BrightFocus president and CEO, said in the release. “We fund some of the best ideas within the scientific community, with grants vetted by the world’s top scientists in the field.

“While we have made significant advances that have brought us closer to new treatment, we have more work to do and no time to lose," Haller continued.

The other $5.2 million in grants will fund research projects for Alzheimer’s disease.

As reported in the release, the addition of the $8.7 million in research grants brings BrightFocus' funding to more than $140 million over the last 4 decades.
