Escalon announces FDA approval of portable UBM

Escalon Medical Corp. announced in a press release that it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration 510(k) clearance for its Sonomed Escalon VuPad.

The company said in the release that the portable VuPad combines its ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) with an ultra-high-resolution screen. The system can capture both still images and video clips and is operated by touch-screen controls.

The VuPad offers A-scanB-scan and UBM modalities in a “tablet-like package,” the company said. Other features include portability, wireless interconnectivity to electronic medical records and image management systems.

Escalon plans to immediately begin shipping VuPad systems as orders are received, according to the release. It also anticipates CE mark approval and clearance in other countries.

"We are pleased by the initial indications and the long-term opportunity surrounding the VuPad and other new products in our pipeline; however, we may experience sales fluctuations as we update our product offering,” Escalon CEO Richard J. DePiano Jr. said in the release. “In addition, planned increases to research and development expenses as well as increased sales and marketing costs could pressure financial results.”
