AOA helps prepare ODs for ICD-10 conversion

The International Classification of Disease, 10th revision code set, commonly known as ICD-10, begins its first trial this month, with an October mandate to fully switch to this new code.

In October, all U.S. health care providers will need to use ICD-10 codes to report medical diagnoses.

To help optometrists prepare, the American Optometric Association has made a members-only summary available of the growing list of ICD-10 and other coding resources.

In a notice sent to its members, the AOA stated that members with questions can send an email or submit them through the online form, and one of the group’s coding experts will respond. Through AOA membership, many of the coding resources are complimentary. Members should check the medical records and coding page on the AOA website regularly for updates, the organization said.
