Mexico congress passes optometry regulations
Optometry in Mexico has taken a step forward in recognizing the health care profession as one that requires a university degree, according to a news release from the World Council of Optometry.
The release stated that the Chamber of Duties of the Mexican congress approved changes in Article 79 of the Health Bill which includes the new regulations.
As detailed in the release, an estimated 48 million people in Mexico need the help of eye care professionals, and visual impairment is the second largest disability in the country, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.
In passing the bill, the Mexican Association of Faculties, Schools, Colleges and Councils of Optometry is looking to regulate optometry and provide the population with affordable care.
The bill must also be approved by the Mexican senate and President Enrique Peña Nieto before it is implemented, the news report said.
