UC Irvine, California Stem Cell partner to create transplantable 3D retina

A stem cell development company recently announced that a large grant has enabled it to partner with the University of California, Irvine, in an effort to develop transplantable 3D retinas.
California Stem Cell (CSC) and the University of California, Irvine (UCI) were awarded a $4.5 million grant from the California Institute of Regenerative Medicine for the study, which is a continuation of CSC research, according to a press release.
As detailed by CSC, the company will use its manufacturing facility and personnel to differentiate and culture the stem cells. In vivo studies will then take place at UCI's Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center.
“This study establishes a valuable partnership between ourselves and a team of very talented scientists at a university known for its excellence in research,” Hans Keirstead, PhD, CSC president and CEO, said in the release. “California Stem Cell looks forward to making a meaningful contribution to work that has the potential to help millions suffering from life-altering retinal diseases.”
If successful, the study could lead to treatments for retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration, according to the press release.
