Google has partnered with vision insurance company VSP Vision Care to offer prescription lenses and subsidized frames for Google Glass, the wearable computer, according to an announcement from Google.

"The VSP/Google partnership includes developing and implementing a training certification for providers, high-quality and experienced manufacturing through the VSPOne Sacramento lab and reimbursement coverage for VSP members and providers," VSP told Primary Care Optometry News.

Google Glass is currently only open to its Explorer program members, but the company hopes to offer the technology to consumers at the end of 2014.

VSP will reimburse members depending on the type of plan they have, VSP said. The frame cost and reimbursement does not include the price of the Google Glass technology.

“Google Glass is the kind of cutting-edge technology that VSP Vision Care is always looking to bring to VSP eye care providers and 60 million VSP members," Jim McGrann, president of VSP Vision Care, said in a statement provided to PCON. "As a not-for-profit, our partnership with Google helps fulfill our mission to help people see by connecting high-quality eye care services through VSP doctors while delivering relevant products to meet the eye care needs of VSP members.”

Google also announced the addition of four styles of frames: split, thin, bold and curve.

At this time, the company has eye care professionals trained to fit the Google Glass technology in New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles, with plans to expand in the coming months.
