Prevent Blindness, a volunteer eye health and safety organization dedicated to fighting blindness and saving sight, has declared February Age-related Macular Degeneration/Low Vision Awareness Month.

Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America said, “The number of cases of those with AMD, retinal disorders and low vision is growing at an alarming rate. Only through education, early detection and treatment can we prevent considerable vision loss.”

The group will offer free educational materials online and through a toll-free number. The resources include:

Living Well with Low Vision – Authored by patient advocate and low vision educator Dan Roberts, MME, this website offers a list of searchable, local low vision resource directories and a blog for those living with age-related eye disease and significant visual impairment.

AMD Awareness Makes a Difference – Offers a free magnetic Amsler grid to monitor a person’s central vision and can help identify vision abnormalities.

Prevent Blindness AMD Learning Center – Provides educational tools, fact sheets and other helpful information on AMD.

See Jane See – Women are the majority within eye diseases and 65% of those diagnosed with AMD. This new online tool is tailored to a woman’s eye health.
