New OD society solicits members

A new professional group for optometrists is inviting members to join in an effort "to give individual optometrists an increasingly important voice," according to a press release.

Specifically, The Optometric Society (TOS) "is dedicated to changing the public perception of the profession and to preventing the unfair treatment of optometrists by third-party payers" as well as "improving the quality, access and parity of vision care in the U.S.," according to the mission statement described on the TOS website.

To achieve its goal, TOS plans to distribute optometric information and "join with other health care professions and organizations to ensure that full-scope optometry is a recognized and equal partner in the health care delivery system," as stated on its website.

The society is currently being run by Jennifer Flaherty, OD; Gary S. Litman, OD, FAAO; Michael A. Santarlas, OD; and Lisa Shin, OD, until board members are elected later this year.

The group is not affiliated with the American Optometric Society, according to the website.
