SEATTLE – Bausch + Lomb announced the launch of PureVision2 Multi-Focal, a monthly silicone hydrogel, here at the American Academy of Optometry’s annual meeting.

The lens is designed to improve near and intermediate vision and provide excellent distance clarity through its three progressive zones, according to a company press release.

Mohinder Merchea, OD, PhD, MBA, FAAO, FBCLA, told Primary Care Optometry News that prior multifocals have primarily addressed distance vision, and patients tended to be dissatisfied with their near and intermediate vision.

“We have more power at near, accurately labeled the distance power and have a broader transition zone,” he said.

Ninety-five percent of doctors fitting the PureVision2 Multi-Focal said in a survey that this lens provides patients with good near, intermediate and distance vision.

“We’re hopeful doctors will start seeing this benefit,” Merchea said.

Ninety percent of the doctors surveyed said the PureVision2 was easier to fit than other multifocals, and nine out of 10 patients reported good comfort and great vision, he said.

Merchea said that all lenses in the PureVision family have 30-day extended wear approval, “improving doctors’ ability to use these types of lenses.”

He added that Bausch + Lomb plans to bring a new peroxide system to market soon.
