HPO, Essilor announce licensing agreement

High Performance Optics and Essilor have signed an exclusive and global license agreement to share technology and information regarding selective blue light filtering for spectacle lenses.

Essilor will continue to focus on product innovation and patenting products, according to an Essilor press release. The company holds 5,600 patents globally.

High Performance Optics’ (HPO’s) core technology was invented by Andrew W. Ishak, OD, who has been researching the effects of blue light on the human retina since 2000, according to an HPO press release.

The two companies have independently developed blue light filtering spectacle technology to protect the retina from harmful blue light wavelengths. The agreement will expand the technology to the vision care industry through global sublicensing.

“The companies believe the HPO global exclusive license to Essilor will allow for a more rapid exploitation and adoption of the technology globally and, in addition, speed its availability to the global population,” HPO said in its press release.
