The American Optometric Society announced in a press release that it will file for bankruptcy and “continue its mission” following the lawsuit with the American Board of Optometry.

In early December, the Central District Court of California ruled that the ABO was entitled to an award of its attorneys’ fees resulting from the court case over board certification with the AOS.

According to the civil minutes of that ruing, the AOS did not object to the amount requested, “other than to assert that the amount is more than the AOS’s assets and would result in it filing for bankruptcy.”

The recent announcement from the AOS said the organization “has received widespread encouragement from both members and nonmembers alike. The AOS will continue to operate as the professional optometric organization representing the voice of the individual optometrist.”

The AOS stated in the press release that it has chosen to seek protection under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code.

“The AOS will continue to mobilize a broad base of support to bring about positive change and prevent our profession from being damaged and divided,” the group stated.”
