Daily disposables may address problems in reusable contact lens wearers
PHOENIX – Symptoms experienced by reusable soft contact lens wearers could be alleviated with daily disposable contacts, according to a study presented here at Academy 2012.
Of 364 patients wearing reusable contact lenses, 42% were classified as “problem” patients due to frequent or constant dryness or irritation, reduced comfortable wearing time, conjunctival injection or corneal staining, according to the study by Michael Spyridon, PhD, and colleagues.
The problem patients were fitted with etafilcon A or nelfilcon A daily disposables and re-evaluated 1 week later.
After 1 week, the prevalence of dryness was decreased from 51.9% to 33.2%, and the prevalence of reduced wear time was decreased from 88.6% to 47.2%.
“Daily disposables significantly reduced the number of patients qualifying for these criteria,” Spyridon said at an academy-sponsored press conference.
