PHOENIX – American Academy of Optometry President, Karla Zadnik, OD, PhD, FAAO, presented the Charles F. Prentice medal to Larry N. Thibos, PhD, FAAO, during the Academy 2012 annual awards ceremony, recognizing him for his work in studying the refractive state of aberrated eyes.

Thibos’s lecture focused on how modern efforts to define and measure refractive states of aberrated eyes, lenses and refractive surgery outcomes have led to new insights about the nature of refractive error, the role of the pupil and new treatment strategies for refractive correction.

Also, the Glenn A. Fry Award was presented to Susana T. L. Chung, OD, PhD, FAAO, for her work regarding plasticity in cases of central vision loss.

In Chung’s lecture, she presented empirical results that show how eye-movement behavior and certain spatial properties adapt to the central vision loss, explained how this was evidence of the plasticity of the visual system following central vision loss late in life and postulated that it would be feasible to improve visual function of these patients through perceptual learning.

Other award winners include: Melissa D. Bailey, OD, PhD, FAAO, for the Irvin M. and Beatrice Borish Award; Olanrewaju M. Oriowo, MSc, PhD, FAAO, for the AAO-Essilor Award for Outstanding Contributions to International Optometry; P. Sarita Soni, OD, MS, FAAO, for the William Feinbloom Award; Roger J. Wilson, OD, FAAO, for the Carl C. Koch Memorial Award; Kenneth Headington, OD, MS, for the Julius F. Neumueller Award in Optics; and John F. Amos, OD, MS, FAAO, for the Life Fellow Award.
