PHOENIX – Contact lens discomfort has been cited as the number one reason for lens wear dropout, according to Alcon data, and a water-gradient hydrogel may address these issues.

Here at a scientific preview held prior to Academy 2012, Alcon representatives discussed the idea of water-gradient daily disposable contact lenses with a highly breathable silicone hydrogel core. The water content transitions from 33% at the core to 80% on the non-silicone hydrophilic surface gel – “a surface water content that’s nearly the same as the corneal surface,” they said.

“These water-gradient lenses combine the heritage of silicone hydrogel innovation and the proprietary manufacturing platform called LightStream Lens technology,” according to Alcon, “with new advancements and designs in surface chemistry to create a lens material called delefilcon A – the building block of water-gradient design.”
