Because more than half of the 2.5 million eye injuries occurring annually occur in the home, and only 35% of Americans wear protective eye wear doing projects that could threaten their vision, Prevent Blindness America has issued a press release stressing to consumers the importance of eye protection around the house.

“It is vitally important to think about our eyes and the best ways to protect them, even when we’re doing work around the yard, house or in the garage,” Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent Blindness America, said in the release. “Eye injuries can happen in a split second but can have an impact on vision for the rest of our lives.”

Prevent Blindness America recommended reducing the risk of falls by securing rugs, removing tripping hazards, and providing effective lighting and handrails. This is especially important in homes where seniors live. Never mix cleaning agents.  Read and follow all manufacturer instructions and warning labels and always use these products in well ventilated areas. Inspect and remove debris from lawns before mowing, the release said.

Wear eye protection when doing automotive work, including changing the oil, jump-starting a dead battery or even using bungee cords to secure items to the roof. Welding or brazing requires special safety goggles or helmets. Consult the equipment instruction or supplier for the proper protection, according to the release.

After any project, make sure hands are washed thoroughly before touching the eyes or face, the release said.
