Colleges of optometry across North America have kicked off the World Sight Day Challenge in an effort to raise funds to combat the uncorrected refractive error in the millions of people worldwide who do not have access to eye care, according to a press release.

American Optometric Student Association (AOSA) trustees and student representatives from the Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity (VOSH) have taken the lead in this venture, planning events such as talent shows and bake sales, among other creative fundraising activities, the release said.

Unique to the student challenge is the award of three travel stipends provided by VOSH International. The stipends will be given to the schools that raise the most donations.

The funds raised during this challenge will be applied toward projects that provide vision care, local training and infrastructure support for people who are blind or vision impaired due to uncorrected refractive error.
