The World Council of Optometry is now accepting nominations for its Distinguished Service Award and its International Optometrist Award, according to an organization press release.

The awards were created to recognize the efforts of optometrists who have made a significant contribution to global eye and vision care.

The Distinguished Service Award is WCO’s highest honor, and is awarded to an optometrist who has made an outstanding contribution to WCO’s mission to create a world where high quality eye health and vision care is accessible to all, according to the release.

The International Optometrist Award is given to an optometrist who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the profession worldwide.

“These awards give us all a chance to reflect on how far the profession has advanced, and is a way for WCO to show the optometric community how grateful we are for the fantastic work that is taking place around the world,” Tone Garaas-Maurdalen, OD, WCO president, said in the release.

Nominations must be received by Oct. 1 and can be made online at http://www.worldoptometry.org/en/about-wco/awards/.

Recipients will be announced at the WCO General Delegates’ Meeting in Malaga, Spain, in April 2013, the release said.
