These photos of an 11-year-old patient who presented with a foreign body in her right eye were chosen as the winner of this month’s “Ocular Photography Challenge.” Zachary S. McCarty, OD, of Chattanooga, Tenn., said the patient obtained the foreign body while swimming in a lake at summer camp. The camp nurse tried to remove it with a cotton swab without success and said to follow up with an eye doctor after camp ended.
The patient’s best corrected visual acuity was 20/20 OD and 20/20 OS. Slit lamp exam revealed the attached photos of the eye. The tick was removed at the slit lamp with a pair of fine-tipped forceps. The patient did well, and after a week of topical antibiotics, the conjunctiva was white and quiet with no residual effects such as fever, rash, aches or pains. The photos were taken with a Tsi Telscreen slit lamp camera.
As this month’s winner, McCarty will receive a pair of YF series binoculars, provided by Kowa.
