Five ODs inducted into hall of fame

CHICAGO – The “Class of 2012” was inducted into the National Optometry Hall of Fame in a reception here at Optometry’s Meeting.
Kevin L. Alexander, OD, PhD, a former American Optometric Association president, has served as dean of the Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University and is the current president of Southern California College of Optometry. He expanded the mission of the college to include interdisciplinary education by adding a physician assistant program.
James A. Boucher, OD, MS, has held leadership positions with a number of optometric associations. He has taught at the colleges of optometry at Indiana University, Illinois, University of Houston and Pacific University, as well as the University of Wyoming. He has received numerous awards, including AOA Optometrist of the Year.
William E. Cochran, OD, DOS, served as a captain in the U.S. Army’s Medical Service Corps. He was president of the Mississippi Optometric Association, Southern College of Optometry (SCO) and the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry. He was awarded SCO’s Lifetime Achievement Award and was named President Emeritus.
Frank Fontana, OD, started his practice in 1950 and was a pioneer in fitting contact lenses. He has authored more than 60 articles and educated fellow practitioners through numerous speaking engagements. He has held volunteer positions with the AOA and the Missouri Optometric Association and helped form the Heart of America Contact Lens Society in 1961.
Thomas L. Lewis, OD, PhD, was vice president and dean of academic affairs and is currently president at Pennsylvania College of Optometry, where the college grew to university status under his leadership. He was president of the American Academy of Optometry, Partnership Foundation for Optometric Education, National Board of Examiners in Optometry and Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry.
