WellPoint Inc. announced the completion of its acquisition of 1-800 CONTACTS Inc.

1-800 CONTACTS allows customers to purchase contacts lenses online at contacts.com, through its toll free number, 1-800 CONTACTS and on mobile devices. The company also offers frames and lenses through its glasses.com web site. It serves approximately 3.3 million customers, according to a press release from WellPoint.

 “WellPoint and 1-800 CONTACTS have complementary capabilities and assets, and we can now focus on leveraging 1-800 CONTACTS’ industry-leading platform to help grow direct-to-consumer relationships across the country and further supplement and expand our vision business,” Angela F. Braly, chair, president and CEO of WellPoint, said in the press release.

WellPoint serves approximately 34 million people on its branded health plans and more than 62 million people through its subsidiaries.

“We are extremely pleased to finalize our agreement even sooner than anticipated,” Braly said.

The acquisition is expected to be finalized in the third quarter of 2012.

1-800 CONTACTS’ headquarters will remain in Draper, Utah, and will become a wholly owned operating division of WellPoint.
