IAPB to honor African optometrist at general assembly
HYDERABAD, India – The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) 9
th General Assembly will honor Naomi Nsubuga for her contributions to opening vision centers and training optometrists in Africa. Dr. Nsubuga’s work has affected the lives of 160,000 people in East Africa over the last 3 years, according to an IAPB press release. Her leadership and grass roots dedication has resulted in nearly 93,000 people receiving eye exams and 66,000 people being screened. Recently elected as the vice president of the African Council of Optometry, Dr. Nsubuga stepped down to focus on the International Centre for Eyecare Education’s East Africa project. The team has helped open 14 vision centers in Tanzania and trained optometrists to manage those centers. In Uganda, Kenya and Ethiopia, Dr. Nsubuga has helped train more than 50 health care workers and eye care professionals in either refraction or spectacle cutting skills. The general assembly will take place here Sept. 17 to 20 and will feature 40 courses, keynote lectures and symposia. More than 150 professionals from around the world are expected to attend. Go to
