Gov. Martin O’Malley signed the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange Act of 2012, allowing stand-alone vision plans to participate in the Maryland Health Benefit Exchange and the Small Business Health Options Program Exchange. According to a VSP press release, the signing of this provision on May 2 makes Maryland the first state to pass legislation addressing the issue of stand-alone vision plans in insurance exchanges.

“The majority of vision care offered in Maryland today through typical employer plans is delivered by stand-alone vision plans,” according to VSP, in its press release. “This preserves the consumer’s right to choose either vision sold as an endorsement to major medical or vision provided through a stand-alone vision plan.”

VSP is hosting an open forum on health care reform in St. Louis on May 24. For more information, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_PksPuvJ9c&feature=youtu.be.
