VSP finds vision problems in one out of four kids

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Vision Service Plan (VSP) has completed its “Kids Get Focused” campaign, finding that about 28% of children have vision-related problems. These figures are consistent with a Prevent Blindness America study, which found that vision problems affect one in four school-age children and one in 20 preschoolers. The goal of VSP’s campaign, which involved children in seven cities, was to educate parents about the need for regular eye exams. Children in Memphis, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; Grand Rapids, Mich.; Portland, Ore.; Columbus, Ohio; Sacramento, Calif.; and Indianapolis were given ballpark tours and heard from players about good vision and sports performance. The children then participated in batting, pitching and catching games. Children identified as having a vision problem were referred to an eye care doctor for a comprehensive exam. Financial assistance was provided to low-income, uninsured children through VSP’s Sight for Students program. VSP is an eye care benefits firm.
