VSP executive: VSP maintains preference for private practice

LAS VEGAS – In August, VSP announced the inclusion of Costco providers in its doctor network. According to VSP vice president of optometric programs, Dan Mannen, OD, “Our priority is to put patients in independent doctors’ practices, but we must address the needs of our clients, too.”

Dr. Mannen told PRIMARY CARE OPTOMETRY NEWS that employers are asking for a retail solution. An affiliate program was started with Costco, and an arrangement with ECCA will go into effect Jan. 1.

“These providers are not in the member doctor network,” Dr. Mannen said. “This is only for employers who ask for it in their contract.”

He noted that the VSP providers with a retail-based contract keep 56% of patients in their stores, while VSP’s private practitioners retain 94%. “This has been effective in the marketplace,” he said.

“We must be light on our feet to be successful in today’s world,” Dr. Mannen said. “Member doctors should be encouraged that VSP is involved in today’s world for the benefit of member patients and doctors.”
