Upper, lower meibomian gland secretions found to be similar

BOSTON — No significant difference was found in the number of meibomian glands yielding liquid secretion in the upper compared to the lower lids, and the total number negatively correlated with symptom scores, according to a poster presented here at Academy 2011 Boston.

Donald R. Korb, OD, FAAO, and Caroline Blackie, OD, PhD, FAAO, analyzed 13 subjects with and without dry eye. A standardized technique was used in all meibomian glands for diagnostic expression, and the number of meibomian glands yielding liquid secretion (MGYLS) was counted in the temporal, central and nasal regions of each lid.

"The mean total number of MGYLS was not significantly different between the upper and lower lids," according to the abstract. However, the central and nasal regions were found to have a significantly higher mean number of MGYLS than the temporal in both lids.

"In this pilot study, there were no significant differences between the number of functional upper and lower lid meibomian glands," the researchers reported in the poster. "There was also no significant difference between upper and lower lid distribution of functional meibomian glands."
