ATLANTA – AmeriSciences announced the launch of OS2, a supplement “developed to incorporate the latest research on age-related macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome and diabetic retinopathy,” said Steve Fertig during a SECO press conference.

OS2, the Ocular Support Solution, includes vitamin D, which has an inverse association with AMD; omega-3 essential fatty acids; alpha lipoic acid, shown to have an effect in diabetic retinopathy and cataracts; astaxanthin, shown to reduce eye strain, improve depth perception and accommodation and offer neural protection; and pycnogenol, shown to be effective in diabetic retinopathy by reducing retinal edema.

Mr. Fertig said the dosage is three capsules a day.

“We’re getting feedback from optometrists and ophthalmologists that OS2 is helping eliminate dry eye with only two capsules a day,” he said.

He added that the product has a 95% dissolution rate. “Within 45 minutes to an hour, every ingredient in the supplement is available to the body to absorb,” he said. “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires 75% for pharmaceuticals. The industry average [for supplements] is 25% to 45%.”

A home delivery/easy ship program is available for patients, Mr. Fertig said. “This has driven up compliance rates as well as provided an opportunity for additional revenue for the practice,” he said.
