Dr. Murphy, of Front Range Eye Associates, Broomfield, Colo., will replace Vic Connors, OD, in leading the organization’s efforts in the U.S. to raise funds for people who are blind or vision impaired due to uncorrected refractive error, according to an Optometry Giving Sight press release.

Dr. Murphy will help Optometry Giving Sight meet its goals over the coming years to procure funding for projects that will provide affordable and accessible eye care services to people in underserved communities.

“I am thrilled to be involved with Optometry Giving Sight in this capacity and am looking forward to working with the U.S. team, as well as my esteemed colleagues, to eliminate preventable blindness in developing countries,” Dr. Murphy said in the release.

In March, Dr. Murphy traveled to Tanzania to train and mentor local optometrists in rural communities. The journey gave Dr. Murphy the opportunity to see how donations to Optometry Giving Sight are changing lives and giving hope to people who otherwise may not be able to see well enough to go to school or care for their families, the release said.

Optometry Giving Sight is a global fundraising initiative that specifically targets the prevention of blindness and impaired vision due to uncorrected refractive error – simply the need for an eye examination and glasses. The organization was created in 2003 by the World Council of Optometry, the International Centre for Eyecare Education and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness as a means of mobilizing resources from the global optometric community to fund the development of sustainable eye care projects for people in need.
