NEW YORK -- A new online glaucoma risk assessment program can help practitioners manage these patients after inputting specific patient information, according to Editorial Board member Murray Fingeret, OD, FAAO. Dr. Fingeret’s presentation kicked off the first day of the Fourth Annual Primary Care Optometry News symposium here.

The risk assessment program was developed by Steve Mansberger, MD, a glaucoma specialist and researcher at Discoveries in Sight and Devers Eye Institute, in Portland, Ore., based on data from the Ocular Hypertensive Treatment Study and a logistical regression model. It calculates a patient’s risk of converting from ocular hypertension to glaucoma in a 5-year period.

Required data include the patient’s age, diabetes status (yes or no), corneal thickness, IOP, PSD (pattern standard deviation from the global indices on the perimetry printout) and vertical cup-to-disc ratio.

The program is available at www.discoveriesinsight.org. An article in the Journal of Glaucoma outlines its use, the advantages and disadvantages of a computerized risk calculator for glaucoma (Mansberger SL. A risk calculator to determine the risk of glaucoma from ocular hypertension. J Glaucoma. 2004;13:345-347).” Dr. Fingeret’s article on the program will appear in the January 2005 issue of Primary Care Optometry News.
