B&L, Nike launch sport contact lenses

DALLAS – Bausch & Lomb and Nike officially launched MaxSight sport-tinted contact lenses here during the AOA Congress. Alan Reichow, OD, spent 7 years taking this product from concept to realization. The lens is currently available in amber for tennis, baseball and softball players or grey-green for golfers and runners.

The lens uses patented Light Architecture to selectively filter light reaching the retina, blocking much of the blue light. Light is focused in a tighter range going from 2.3 D (0.84 mm) in a naked eye to 1.1 D (0.39 mm) with MaxSight. According to Dr. Reichow, MaxSight creates “a crisper image by blocking out 90% of blue light that produces scatter or haze.” The lens is designed to cover the entire cornea in order to eliminate stray light. MaxSight also filters out 95% UVA and UVB light and increases contrast. So far, 500 international athletes have been fitted with MaxSight. “This is the ultimate in performance eye wear,” said Dr. Reichow at the launch event.
