BOSTON — Alden Optical announced here at Academy 2011 Boston that, in an effort to enter the keratoconic segment of the contact lens market, it has launched its new NovaKone soft contact lens.

The posterior design of the lens works to neutralize irregular astigmatism and optimize physical fit, and front surface toricity corrects for residual regular astigmatism, while Alden Optical's proprietary Dual Elliptical Stabilization ensures excellent

rotational stability, according to a company press release.

"NovaKone is a novel soft lens design for patients with keratoconus. Many patients are unable to tolerate gas-permeable lenses, and in clinical trials we confirmed that NovaKone is a great option for these patients and may fit an even larger niche in the specialty practice," Alden President Tom Shone commented in the press release.

Alden's Mandy Walsh told attendees at a press conference that the lens is made of hioxifilcon, with 15-mm diameter as a standard lens, "but you can get customized sizes," she said.

The lenses are available in a wide power range, -30 D to +30 D, and 18 lenses are in the diagnostic fitting set, she said.
