‘Sun spots’

These photos of a 15-year-old patient who presented with a constant central “sun spot” over her vision in the left eye for 2 weeks were chosen as the winner of this month’s “Ocular Photography Challenge.” Ami Nadolsky, OD, of Salem, Va., said the patient admitted to owning a cat that caused some scratches.

The patient’s best-corrected visual acuity was 20/15-3 OD and 20/30-1 OS. The anterior segments were normal; however, posterior segment findings in the left eye exhibited a swollen optic nerve head and macular exudates in a stellate pattern.

The patient was diagnosed with neuroretinitis related to cat-scratch disease, sent for a laboratory work-up to rule out other causes and treated empirically with azithromycin.

These photos were taken with the Topcon TRC-NW5 nonmydriatic retinal camera with IMACAM software at Invision of Salem, Va.

As this month’s winner, Dr. Nadolsky will receive an HA-2 Handheld Tonometer, provided by Kowa.

Submissions for the contest can be e-mailed to nhemphill@slackinc.com. They are judged anonymously by a panel of Primary Care Optometry News Editorial Board members.

Please provide a photo of at least 300 dpi, a 100-word description of the case including what imaging system was used and the name of your home town. Photos may not have been previously published. You will be asked to grant permission to SLACK Inc. to publish your photo.

Contestants are permitted to win once a year. Kowa provides the prizes, including one annual grand prize awarded to the winner chosen from among each round’s winners. Delivery of prizes may take up to 120 days.
