HARRISBURG, Pa. The Pennsylvania Optometric Association (POA) has been advised that Pennsylvania optometrists can now be issued Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) numbers for prescribing controlled substances now that a review of the approved drug list is complete.
Optometrists may now submit their applications for processing. When certification is confirmed, a DEA number will be issued and the applicant will be mailed a DEA Certificate of Registration. The registration must be renewed every 3 years.
Applications for registration (DEA form 224) may be obtained from Elizabeth White and Maria Mendoza, DEA registration assistants. They can be reached by phone at (215) 597-9536 or by fax at (215) 597-0107. You may also request an application by calling (800) 882-9539 and selecting option 3. Questions should be directed to Ms. White and Ms. Mendoza or to the duty investigator who can be reached at (215) 597-9540.
If you already have an application, you can send it in now for processing to: DEA Registration Section, Central Station, P.O. Box 28083, Washington, DC 20038-8083. A check for $210 must be included with the application.
Therapeutic pharmaceutical agent (TPA) legislation was passed in October 1996 in Pennsylvania. The law allows certified optometrists to prescribe topical agents, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antibacterial medications, antihistamines and antivirals. While ODs may prescribe oral analgesics and antibiotics, practitioners may not treat glaucoma or administer steroids and beta-blockers.
