CooperVision will become a gold global sponsor of Optometry Giving Sight, and National Vision recently made a large contribution to the organization, according to an Optometry Giving Sight press release.

The CooperVision gold sponsorship is in addition to the group’s support for OGS in Australia, where it is a silver national sponsor, and to contributions made in Southeast Asia, Latin America and other parts of the world, according to the release.

“Ninety percent of the world’s preventable blindness occurs in the developing world,” Dr. Juan Carlos Aragon, president of CooperVision for Asia Pacific and Latin America, said in the release. “Our company, on a worldwide basis, wants to be part of the solution.”

“This support from CooperVision will greatly assist our efforts to raise more money to fund additional sustainable eye care projects in underserved communities,” Clive Miller, OGS global chief executive officer, said in the release. He said that OS disbursed more than $1.1 million to 18 refractive error projects in 16 countries in 2010.

National Vision also recently contributed $7,500 to OGS, and individual doctors associated with the company gave an additional $2,500, according to the press release.

“National Vision, like Optometry Giving Sight, is dedicated to finding ways to bring sustainable eye care services and eye wear products to people in need around the world,” Reade Fahs, CEO and president of National Vision, said in the release.
