North Central States, TOA support Optometry Giving Sight

The North Central States Optometric Council (NCSOC) and the Texas Optometric Association (TOA) have both named Optometry Giving Sight as their international charity of choice. Together, the two groups comprise more than 5,000 optometrist members.

The NCSOC represents optometrists in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota. In 2006, the Wisconsin Optometric Association designated Optometry Giving Sight as its International Charity of Choice

“Optometry has the power to give sight to the millions who are needlessly blind or vision impaired by supporting Optometry Giving Sight,” NCSOC President Scott Ream, OD, said. “We urge all state associations to join NCSOC and designate Optometry Giving Sight as their international charity of choice and for individual optometrists to donate to this worthy cause.”

TOA President Brian Blount, OD, expressed similar sentiments. “Optometry Giving Sight represents the promise of a future for those who are blind or vision impaired due to refractive error,” he said. “I urge all my colleagues to join Optometry Giving Sight by making a regular monthly donation or joining the World Sight Day Challenge this October.”

Optometry Giving Sight raises funds for sustainable vision care services for people who are blind or vision impaired simply because they do not have access to an eye exam and a pair of glasses. Through the annual World Sight Day Challenge, Optometry Giving Sight invites all optometrists to donate their eye exam fees on World Sight Day Oct. 9 to help fund projects that will provide vision care, local training and infrastructure development in countries that lack basic eye care services.

Optometrists can register for the challenge at www.givingsight.org or by calling (888) OGS-GIVE.
