Multiple retinal capillary hemangiomas
![]() |
This photo of a patient who complained of gradual loss of peripheral vision in the right eye for the past 3 months was chosen as the winner of this months Ocular Photography Challenge. Bethanie Deemer, OD, of Peoira, Ariz., said the 28-year-old white male denied any flashes, floaters and eye pain.
The patients medical and ocular history was unremarkable. He did not recall ever having an eye examination. Entering visual acuity was OD 20/200 (eccentric viewing) and OS 20/20. He had a 4+ afferent pupillary defect in the right eye. Confrontations revealed an absolute superior visual field defect. The anterior segment was normal. His dilated fundus exam in the right eye is shown.
The patient was diagnosed with multiple retinal capillary hemangiomas. As it turns out, he had a history of pheochromocytoma and likely has von Hippels disease. He was referred to an oncologist to rule out any intracranial hemangiomas, abdominal tumors or renal cell carcinoma.
The photo was taken with a Cannon CR-5 10 Megapix with the Synemed software.
As this months winner, Dr. Deemer will receive an HA-2 Handheld Tonometer, provided by Kowa.
