The Professional Association and Practice Excellence

In last month’s Professional Practice article (Lukes & Moore, 2010), an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) respiratory standard was quoted as recognizing “physician or other licensed health care provider” as the professional making determinations. OSHA uses the abbreviation PLHCP for this phrase, the actual definition of which is “physician or other licensed health care professional.” I felt compelled to point this out because some companies and individuals conducting seminars on record-keeping compliance are interchanging the terms “professional” and “provider.” They are stating that a physician, a nurse practitioner, a family nurse practitioner, or a physician assistant, not a licensed professional such as a registered nurse, must administer the medical questionnaire for fit-testing.
