Some of the most well known names in optometry will come together in Philadelphia for the Seventh Annual Primary Care Optometry News Symposium next month, and attendees will have a greater opportunity than ever to interact with them.
Audience participation
In addition to the always-enlightening question-and-answer period at the end of each presentation, PCON has added three new features to increase audience-faculty interaction.
Attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with well-known optometrists-lecturers during a “Meet the Faculty” reception, a new addition this year.
The online registration form now provides a space for attendees to submit topics and questions for the presenters in advance.
A state-of-the art audience response system will allow attendees to answer questions during the presentations and monitor their progress.
Course Director and PCON Editor Michael D. DePaolis, OD, FAAO, has designed the program to address every aspect of primary care optometry. “We realize that our colleagues are extremely busy and that their continuing education efforts must be time well spent,” Dr. DePaolis said in an interview. “We are making every attempt to be sure that our PCON Symposium is contemporary and clinically relevant.
“Education, in general, and continuing medical education, in particular, is moving away from the time-honored lecture format,” he continued. “Given this trend, we’ve designed our symposium to be interative and engaging. I’m confident that attendees will find it more akin to a collegial discussion group than a traditional lecture.”
Columnist lecturers
One lecture from PCON columnist Leonid Skorin Jr., OD, DO, FAAO, will cover vitamins, minerals and supplements. “Integrative medicine is now at the forefront,” Dr. Skorin told PCON, “and all clinicians need to know how complementary and alternative treatments can be successfully integrated into their practice for the benefit of their patients.
Dr. Skorin is teaming up with PCON Editorial Board member Bruce E. Onofrey, OD, RPh, to address megatrends in health care and ocular emergencies. “We will address the importance of evidence-based medicine and the way it is changing our approach to a host of disorders such as dry eye, stroke and glaucoma,” Dr. Onofrey said. “We will also emphasize the need for being thorough in evaluating patient complaints. Even cases that appear simple initially can turn into sight- and life-threatening conditions.”
PCON columnist Marlane J. Brown, OD, FAAO, will team up with Dr. DePaolis to deliver three contact lens lectures covering children and contacts, silicone hydrogels and difficult fits. “I’m honored to be joining this renowned group of presenters in Philadelphia,” Dr. Brown said.
PCON columnist and Editorial Board member Charles B. Brownlow, OD, FAAO, will apply his coding lectures to the clinical topics addressed at the meeting in some of the other presentations. “It’s always fun to speak at PCON’s annual symposium,” Dr. Brownlow said in an interview. “Dr. DePaolis and the other organizers do a great job of choosing subjects and creating course ideas that stimulate us, the speakers, to develop new courses to maximize the value to attendees.
“I’ve also been impressed with the attendees,” Dr. Brownlow continued, “as they are well informed and always bring great questions and suggestions to the mix. My courses at this year’s PCON Symposium will focus on unusual challenges related to medical records and choosing the correct codes, clarifying some points that have previously seemed to be somewhat confusing and contradictory.”
Kenneth W. Rudzinski, CFP, CLU, ChFC, CASL, PCON’s “Worth Building” columnist, will counsel attendees on avoiding mistakes in retirement planning. “Are you prepared for the longest vacation of your life?” he asks. “It’s called retirement and just maybe it’s keeping you or your spouse up at night thinking about it.
“We’ll not only talk about several major challenges to a successful retirement, but we’ll also uncover some fundamental planning pointers to give you a jump start at doing it right,” Mr. Rudzinski told PCON. “You deserve a good night’s sleep.”
