Victor Connors, OD, will lead Optometry Giving Sight’s efforts in the United States to raise funds for people who are blind or vision impaired due to refractive error. Wisconsin-based Dr. Connors will replace Barry Weiner, OD, as the organization’s chair of the U.S. National Committee.

Dr. Connors will help Optometry Giving Sight meet its goals over the coming years, including procuring funding for projects that would screen more than 5 million people by 2009 and provide training and infrastructure development in communities that lack access to basic vision care services.

Currently a member of Optometry Giving Sight’s Global Board, Dr. Connors is the immediate past president of the World Council of Optometry and past president of the American Optometric Association and the Wisconsin Optometric Association. He practices at Isthmus Eye Care, a Vision Source-affiliated practice with offices in Middleton and Madison, Wis.

Dr. Weiner and previous co-chair Prof. Brien Holden will now become deputy co-chairs.

Optometry Giving Sight is a joint initiative of the World Optometry Foundation, the International Centre for Eyecare Education and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. National industry sponsors include CIBA Vision, the Institute for Eye Research, Marchon, Vision Source, Signet Armorlite, AllAboutVision.com and EyeVis.
