Astrocytic hamartoma

This photo of a 39-year-old white male with a chief complaint of distance blur in both eyes was chosen as the winner of this month’s “Ocular Photography Challenge.” Brandon T. Armstrong, OD, of Greenwood, Ind., said this patient’s past ocular history included an eye exam 15 years ago with no history of ocular infection, trauma, surgery or significant diagnosis.

His best corrected visual acuity revealed 20/20 Snellen in both eyes. The patient noted a “shadow” in his left eye. The anterior segment revealed no apparent pathology. The dilated fundus exam was normal in the right eye and is shown in the left eye. The image was taken with a Topcon TRC-NW6S.

He was diagnosed with an astrocytic hamartoma in the left eye and referred to a neurologist for a work-up for tuberous sclerosis and neurofibromatosis to rule out other lesions in the central nervous system.

As this month’s winner, Dr. Armstrong will receive an HA-2 Handheld Tonometer, provided by Kowa.

Submissions for the contest can be e-mailed to nhemphill@slackinc.com. They are judged anonymously by a panel of PCON Editorial Board members. Please provide a photo of at least 300 dpi and a 100-word description of the case, including what imaging system was used. Photos may not have been previously published. You will be asked to grant permission for SLACK Inc. to publish your photo.

Contestants are permitted to win once a year. Kowa provides the prizes, including one grand annual prize awarded to the winner chosen from among each round’s winners. Delivery of prizes may take up to 120 days.
