AOA House of Delegates passes resolutions
LAS VEGAS During the American Optometric Association (AOA) House of Delegates meeting, the delegates passed two resolutions, one supporting the Optometric Disaster Relief Fund and the other recognizing the commitment of Alden Norman Haffner, OD, PhD, to the field of optometry.
With the passage of the first resolution, the AOA endorses and encourages the American Optometric Institute to conduct ongoing fundraising nationally for the Optometric Disease Relief Fund program.
Contributions will be solicited from individual doctors, the ophthalmic industry and other sources, and each state-affiliated association may solicit a $25 donation annually from its members.
The second resolution stated that the House of Delegates expresses its sincere and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Haffner and recognizes and celebrates his decades of extraordinary service to the profession of optometry, optometric education and to the fields of public health and health care policy.
Dr. Haffner retired on Dec. 31, 2005, as president of the State University of New York College of Optometry and executive director of the Optometric Center of New York. His leadership spearheaded the legislation creating the New York State University College of Optometry, according to the resolution, and he is a member of the National Optometry Hall of Fame. Dr. Haffner still serves as the president of the New York Childrens Vision Coalition.
