These photos of a patient who presented complaining of a mildly aching, blurry left eye were chosen as the winner of this month’s “Ocular Photography Challenge.” Sara Weidmayer, OD, of Jackson, Mich., said the 59-year-old white man reported that these symptoms began 2 days prior.

His visual acuity was 20/25- OD and 20/150- OS. Anterior segment findings in the left eye were significant for 3+ conjunctival injection, moderate corneal edema with striae, 3+ anterior chamber cells and flare and posterior synechiae nearly 360 degrees. IOP was 16 mm Hg.

He was diagnosed with severe nongranulomatous anterior uveitis. The patient has no known history of systemic inflammatory or autoimmune disease and is HLA-B27 negative. The synechiae was partially broken with 10% phenylephrine, he responded well to topical prednisolone acetate and homatropine use and has since recovered to 20/30 acuity.

The first photo was taken at the initial visit; the second was taken 5 days later; the third was taken 3 weeks after that. All photos were taken with the EyeRes ET-5 Slit Lamp Camera with premium software.

As this month’s winner, Dr. Weidmayer will receive an HA-2 Handheld Tonometer, provided by Kowa.

Submissions for the contest can be e-mailed to nhemphill@slackinc.com. They are judged anonymously by a panel of Primary Care Optometry News Editorial Board members.

Please provide a photo of at least 300 dpi, a 100-word description of the case including what imaging system was used and the name of your home town. Photos may not have been previously published. You will be asked to grant permission to SLACK Inc. to publish your photo.

Contestants are permitted to win once a year. Kowa provides the prizes, including one annual grand prize awarded to the winner chosen from among each round’s winners. Delivery of prizes may take up to 120 days.
