The FDA approved the Zeiss Mel 90 excimer laser for the treatment of myopia, hyperopia and mixed astigmatism, according to a press release.
The Mel 90 integrates into the Zeiss Corneal Refractive Workflow and complements the Zeiss VisuMax 800 with SMILE pro software. As Healio previously reported, the VisuMax 800 with SMILE pro was approved by the FDA for the treatment of myopia in January 2024.
According to the release, the user interface of the Mel 90 can help expedite procedures, and its touch screen can be positioned to improve surgeon ergonomics.
“The FDA approval of the Zeiss Mel 90 excimer laser is a game changer for refractive surgery in the U.S. This advanced technology, with its Triple-A ablation algorithm and fast ablation speed, sets a new benchmark for precision, safety and efficiency,” John F. Doane, MD, FACS, a refractive surgeon with Discover Vision Centers in Kansas City, Missouri, said in the release. “I am particularly impressed by the system’s ability to simplify treatment planning while delivering highly predictable and tissue-conserving results.”
