Ophthalmic community mourns loss of Kirk H. Packo

Kirk H. Packo, MD, professor and chairman emeritus of the department of ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, died Sept. 1, according to an announcement from Illinois Retina Associates.

Packo was a vitreoretinal surgeon, educator, researcher and inventor whose research interests included complex retinal surgery and instrument development. He was the co-founder of Rush’s fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery, as well as a senior partner with Illinois Retina Associates, which he joined in 1985.

Packo attended medical school at Saint Louis University, graduated from the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary residency program and completed his fellowship at Emory University.

A past president of the American Society of Retina Specialists, Packo invented more than 25 surgical instruments, held two U.S. patents and collaborated on the development of the artificial silicon retina. He also served on advisory boards for several manufacturers in the retinal surgery instrumentation space.

“He will be remembered by his patients for taking the time to give genuine, heartfelt care,” his obituary said.

It is hard to imagine the world of retina without Dr. Packo.

Kirk contributed to our field in so many ways. The greatest impact he had on my life was through his teaching. Kirk’s annual talk at ASRS on how to create compelling talks left an indelible impact. He was so far ahead of his time creating brilliant surgical videos. He had such a brilliant way of mixing education and entertainment while adding a beautiful touch of humor.

While he had so many great qualities, the thing that I will miss most about Kirk is his love and passion for what we do.
