SEATTLE — In this Healio Video Perspective from the ASRS annual meeting, Darius M. Moshfeghi, MD, FASRS, discusses the LONGROP study in retinopathy of prematurity.
The study investigated grading techniques in ROP, comparing telemedicine vs. simulated binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy for the outcome of “tempo,” defined as the ability to determine whether an eye exam is better, same or worse compared with another examination.
“While we did not show that there was a difference in the ability to detect tempo over time, we did show that the graders — and this is the first time that this has been demonstrated — were integrating micro changes at the feature level and at the image level to achieve their diagnosis of better, same or worse from week to week, and also that telemedicine offers the ability to address the fatigue component of this and result in a greater scalable workforce for telemedicine screening of retinopathy of prematurity,” Moshfeghi said.
